Heroku Free Products Are Ending What To Do Next

Did you get the email? Yes it’s true Heroku free products are being phased out.

“Starting November 28, 2022, free Heroku Dynos, free Heroku Postgres, and free Heroku Data for Redis® will no longer be available. You can learn more about these and other important changes from our GM, Bob Wise, on the Heroku blog.

Existing free dynos and Heroku data add-ons will be impacted, so action by you is required. To prevent any disruption to your apps or data using free plans, you will need to upgrade from a free plan to a paid plan before November 28, 2022.”

Essentially, Heroku will eliminate all of their free services, which were mostly used by non-commercial applications like personal projects and proof of concept.

They will also be removing accounts that have been inactive for more than a year. This means, if you have anything stored or running on their services it is crucial you login before the November deadline to retrieve your files.

It’s important to note services WILL NOT be automatically migrated, you must take action to keep your applications online. So you will need to have a new website hosting provider, but what should you be looking for? Which one hosting provider should you switch to?

You want to be careful which hosting provider you choose as you will end up paying more for bad service. What many hosting providers do is put your website on the same server as thousands of other websites, making your website lower, less secure, and rank lower on search engines.

What Should I Do Next?

If you’re planning on staying with Heroku then you’ll want to upgrade to one of their paid plans, this can be done from your dashboard. However, if you’re looking to make a switch to a new hosting company, there are many things to consider.

For example, what type of services are you using? SQL? NoSQL? PHP? Node? the hosting provider you select will need to be able to cater to your apps specific needs or you’ll need to spend many hours retooling your app for the services available on your new provider.Another thing you’ll want to consider is resources. How much space, and how many visitors your app receives every month is a crucial consideration when choosing a new webhost.

Many of the popular shared hosting providers may appear to have unlimited plans, but the devil is in the details and many of these plans have IOPS or inode restrictions (in simple terms restrictions to the number of processes, or files you may have). In addition you’ll want to consider the services that come with your hosting:

  • Regular backups.
  • Maintenance.
  • Monthly payments.
  • Do you have your own server?
  • Support levels.
